I'm translating a text on historical linguistics from Italian to English (not for profit) and the following Hungarian phase crops up - presumably comparing the word in Vogul to Old Hungarian. I presume that m. means magyar/Hungarian and vog. Vogul, but perhaps someone can help me with this sentence as H. is not one of my languages.

In my reading the meaning of the text is something like:
In addition to the old Hungarian "mevet", the Vogul "magint-, mäint-" shows that in this case also the form containing m is older.
Now, I am no linguist, so I am not sure about "older" (literally: closer to the origins) but this appears to make sense to me. Additional detail regarding the context would be helpful in order to avoid mistranslation.

that's the literal translation of your phrase - presumably, "the ancient Hungarian form is more authentic over the Vogul..."

: 1) the quote is using Vogul to reinforce the point, not to contrast it w/ O.Hu; 2)probably not "authentic" (surely not "genuine") in historical linguistics, but merely an "older" or "original" form; 3)"more authentic over" is not English

Fine! After closer scrutiny, I agree that one is no more authentic than the other, but I stand by the ancient "m. mevet".
