German term

(Lager)Fach

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Warehouse Management System
I'm looking for an idiomatic translation for "Fach" (Lagerfach), used in a warehouse management software. Background: Storage locations in the WMS are sometimes further divided into several "Fächer".

The translation 'bin' should not be used acc. to the customer and 'sub-location' is unfortunately not possible either (already used in another context).

Can anyone suggest a translation other than 'bin' and 'sub-location' which is widely accepted in a logistics context?

Thanks in advance!
Claudia

Discussion

Charlotte Farrell Apr 9, 2013:
In response to Heather's suggestion, I quite like 'compartment' but would find that more appropriate for a 'Fach' within the warehouse rather than within the software, so it depends on what is meant, exactly.
claudia_k8 (asker) Apr 9, 2013:
Thanks to both of you for your quick help.

It depends on the individual customer whether a Fach is an acutal Fach in the warehouse or just a logical unit within the WMS. But I guess both 'divisions' and 'units' would be suitable.
Charlotte Farrell Apr 9, 2013:
Would something simple like 'divisions' do?
Marie Jackson Apr 9, 2013:
Hmmm depends... Are we talking about Fächer within the warehouse or Fächer within the warehouse management software? My first instinct would be to go with something like "unit", but you may have already used that elsewhere...

storage space/compartment

these are fairly common terms used in warehousing
unit is ok too
hope that helps!
Example sentence:

This logical address can be either the coordinates (e.g. shelf designation and X-Y coordinate) or the EAN code of the product stored in the warehouse compartment.

Since the rack feeder (a telescoping fork) needs to lift the pallets from their storage spaces, more room is needed for each storage space in comparison with a compact store

agree jccantrell : compartment was my first thought, but that usually has some sort of walls around it. Storage space would fit, too.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks! Compartment is probably the best term within the software, it's not too long for the buttons and it's specific enough for the users to quickly grasp its function"
