Discussion

Bernhard Sulzer May 21, 2010:
processing I'm with opolt here; I see auseinandersetzen more in the sense of "processing" (the German "verarbeiten" is similar). :-) These constructs (arrays) of more or less meaningful ideas / concepts floating about (seemingly aimlessly?!) are coming to your town, and the wiseguys will hang on to them, examine them, relate them to what they know or don't know, climb all over them (careful!!) and then will take some of these more or less meaningful entities and ......:)
opolt May 21, 2010:
Auseinandersetzen This shouldn't be translated too literally IMHO, as the verb is often used without giving much thought to its original meaning. The basic gist here is "to interact with, to assimilate, to take in", etc.
David Williams (asker) May 21, 2010:
Thanks for those suggestions I like "circulating ideas" too, but am not sure how best to express the whole second half of the sentence. How does "in which local knowledge is now linked to and confronts globally circulating ideas" sound? Or ""in which local knowledge is now linked to and grapples with/tackles globally circulating ideas" "

Konstrukt/Construct (philosophy of science) - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A construct in the philosophy of science is an ideal object (i.e., one the existence of which may be said to depend upon a subject's mind) as opposed to a real object (one the existence of which is not so dependent).

Concepts, such as those designated, say, by the sign 3 or the word liberty; hypotheses (such as that designated by the sentence, "evolutionary theory refers to individuals and populations"); theories (e.g., evolutionary theory, gravitational theory); classifications (e.g., biological taxonomy) and other conceptual entities are, by this argument, constructs.

Ich denke das Wort Konstrukt sollte erhalten vbleiben, da es ein feststehender Ausdruck ist. Nichtsdesto trotz bin ich mit dem Rest meines Vorschlags auch nicht allzu zufrieden.

Es bliebe auch noch zu klaren, was "Sinn" hier genau bedeutet, z.b. Sinn des Lebens oder ehe in Richtung Bedeutung...

agree Stephan Elkins : globally circulating constructs of meaning seems an adequate solution

danke, stephan.
agree Paul Skidmore : I like Stephan Elkins' phrase. A lot depends on the target audience. "constructs of meaning" is good for an academic article, but probably too highbrow for a text designed for general consumption

German term (edited): flottierenden Sinnkonstrukten

circulating ideas

just to get the ball rolling, I would suggest for

"weltweit flottierenden Sinnkonstrukten"

"globally circulating ideas" which contrasts nicely with local knowledge
Peer comment(s):

agree Damian Harrison (X) : Certainly something along these lines.

German term (edited): weltweit flottierenden Sinnkonstrukten

globally widespread structures of meaning

Or "structures of meaning that go/revolve around the world".
A suggestion.

German term (edited): flottierenden Sinnkonstrukten

s.u.

e.g. "places of development, where local knowledge allies or clashes with
globally meandering constructs of signification"

IMO 'Institutionen' is pretty doubtful and I would tone it down.
The alternative "floating" for meandering gives an idea that processes of signification are like flotsam, but usually they are following certain agendas and directions and inner energies - they change directions, but not just arbitrarily.
Signification as a term in Linguistics, not "meaning" but "allocation of meaning"
