Discussion

Elisabeth Kissel Jan 4, 2010:
sibling spacing Just a thought and this might be way off the mark, but I'm wondering whether this would have anything to do with sibling spacing. Maybe the spacing deserves a mention (in brackets) because it is particularly close or, on the other hand, they are far apart in age and the older one does not feel close to the younger one?

Anne-Marie Grant (X) Jan 4, 2010:
One possible translation of Abstand is 'displacement' and I'm wondering if this could be to do with the child's sense of having been displaced by the arrival of his younger brother.
Cynthia Göttle-Greenwood (asker) Jan 4, 2010:
Hi Teresa: I can guess the meaning, just thought there might be a specific phrase therapists use. The text gives: Das Kind bringt eine gewisse Distanzierung zum jüngeren Bruder (Abstandsplatzerung) zum Ausdruck.
Teresa Reinhardt Jan 4, 2010:
If you want more than educated guesses, you will have to start providing some context.

keeping at arm's length

I believe this would be universally understood without creating any artificial construct. It simply implies 'standoffishness'. The one single google example refers to an engineering-type issue, so it's not an exclusive term used in psychology.

Sounds good Gangels, but it is for an official document and this phrase sounds a bit too "locker".

neutral Armorel Young : I'd be wary of saying that the child has a personality disorder unless it is specifically stated in the asker's text

neutral Anne-Marie Grant (X) : totally agree with Armorel

neutral Teresa Reinhardt : Distancing might be OK, but otherwise I don't see how diagnosing a disorder would be warranted
