German term

als gölte keine Ferne

German to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
I'm unable to find the term "gölte" in any dictionaries. Has anyone come across this. Here's the word in the context of the poem:

Schatten. Wie Pfeile gejagt, als gölte keine Ferne.
Im Sande beschwert sich der Schuh, im Winde der Flügel,
Im lockeren Laube die Neugier. Die Fragen sind stumm.
Eines von drüben? Was ist drüben? Unterm Moos bittet
Die Erde solch ein Wissen. Will noch die Hand?
“Nein.” Was will noch? “Nichts.” Und trotzdem?
Ungestümes Wort, vom Tage satt und reif: Knabenhorn. . .
Nun ist es leicht gesagt. “Was du nich alles hoffst!?

as if there were no distance

it's the subjunctive of gelten - so subjunctive in English too (i.e. "were" rather than "was")
Peer comment(s):

agree Lancashireman : Subjunctive in source text > subjunctive in target text

agree Helen Shiner : The subjunctive matters even if distance doesn't!

as if the was no distance/as if distance wouldn't/didn't matter

"gölte" is ancient German for "gelte", e. g. gelten, gilt, etc

as if no distance were to count

Irrealis ist es tatsächlich. Das heißt aber nicht, daß das "gölte" unübersetzt unter den Tisch fallen sollte. Der archaische Unterton aber --- "as if no distance went for aught"?
