German term

Ausgangsmusik

German to English Art/Literary Music Programm eines Gedächtnisfeiers
The music will probably be played (Mozart or Beethoven). The church service and the funeral have already taken place. This service will be held for a former member of the university and in an auditorium of the university.

Thank you (again)! :-)

Discussion

Francis Lee (X) Apr 6, 2006:
Does this term simply appear on the "programme"? Is the music to be played as people leave the campus service?

postlude

" An organ postlude is played after the recessional hymn has been sung and while guests are leaving. This can be quiet and meditative, or majestic and imposing, as the family desires."

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Oh, oh... I'm going against the majority here, but "musical postlude" worked well, considering I also used "musical prelude" and "musical interlude" - the client was happy. My thanks also go out to David, whose suggestion could've worked just as well (IMHO). :-)"

"recessional" would be enough I would say

Music for 10:00 AM Funeral Mass, St. Pius X Church, Plainview, NY ... We played a recording him singing it as the recessional at his funeral. ...

I wouldn't stretch it to "song", "hymn" or any such like as I remember attending a funeral and they played us out with jazz

Peer comment(s):

agree Lisa Davey : this is the term I was just checking. It is more for a church than a university lecture hall - but then, how many people have an extra bit of their funeral held at the uni? A bit specialist and unusual, therefore "churchy" language is allowed, I think!

thanks Lisa ... you have the "processional" before and the "recessional" after
agree Ann C Sherwin : I'm pretty sure it's used in university graduation ceremonies too. It's not just a church term.

neutral Ian M-H (X) : I believe the congegration/audience remains seated during the recessional, which (in a church setting) is played as the *clergy* departs.
