Olaf, when I was in basic training, I learned how to fire a rifle grenade. That\'s a grenade attached to the rifle. But a Granatwerfer is a mortar.

agree Kevin Fulton : Confirmed by WWII-era military dictionary

agree Wolf Brosius (X) : mortarperson these days???
8 mins
Maybe in the Israeli army?
agree Margaret OConnell Ian Stewart (X) : Definately a mortarman. Genardiere oder Panzergrenardiere are infantry or mechanized infantry. Mortars are part of infantry/mech. inf. battalions and provide indirect fire support

Indeed it does, Ted; and my step-son is an OFW in one....
agree Mario Marcolin : very true

neutral Kevin Fulton : Grenadier generally refers to an infantryman. In WWI the various Volksgrenadier regiments, for example, were generally made up of riflemen.THe original French term referred to infantry troops rather than artillery.
