Thanks to you both and especially for being so refreshingly unconcerned about the points. Nicole you steered me in just the right direction. I'd already decided on 'undersigned' but since Hazmatgerman submitted the precise phrase I will award the points there. In any case thanks both for the invaluable help when wood and trees were clouded by a deadline. Obvious when you realise it....I will use the term in full as there is no spac restriction - just the Germans trying and succeeding in confusing m. Thanks again you have both been wonderful.

Points I wouldn't mind either if hazmatgerman got the points, since I was only guessing and I am not on the hunt for KudoZ points either ;-) Moreover, I think the translation "undersigned" proposed by hazmatgerman is more commonly used when referring to oneself in the third person.

Thanks Hazmatgerman. However I think Nicole should really get the points as she came up with first but didn't post it as an answer. Not sure of the Proz etiquette now and what i should do in this situation to be fair to all and not upset anyone??

That could make perfect sense since the whole document is signed by the 'Kriminaloberkommisarin' so I suppose two of them interviewed the witnesses. I'll wait to see what other suggestions I get - if any any - before awarding the points.

Could be an abbreviaton for "Unterzeichner", i. e. "signatory", but I am just guessing. Grammatically, it doesn't make sense for the first "Uz.", there seems to be something missing. It could be "Den Ermittlungen des Unterzeichners zufolge war...."
