German term

abbilden lassen

German to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
I'm confused by the meaning of 'abbilden lassen' in the context below. I have a number of ways of translating it: as copy, represent, map, simulate?

CONTEXT: "Der neueste Trend der Virtualisierung ermöglicht virtuelle Maschinen, die sich als Definition einer physikalischen Maschine wie ein vollständiges, autonomes Computersystem in einer Softwareschicht abbilden lassen."

Any suggestions? Mac.

Discussion

Kcda May 29, 2007:
A virtuall machine that can "pretend" to exist as a complete autonomous computer system within a software layer. I think your suggestion of represent or simulate is correct. I would consider using simulating!?

agree Ken Cox : good idea

disagree Kcda : It is simulating a physical maschine or respectively representing one. Not necessarily open for modelling or manipulation.

disagree Peter Barker : No. Modelling is creating an artificial representation of a system so as to investigate its behaviour. This is creating software that mimics the behaviour of a piece of hardware.
