It concerns an area of Berlin, which is suppposed to be the "gute Stube". Says "parlour" in the dictionary, but I'm not sure if this will convey the point about the type of area it is - well off. Has anyone got any idea? I can only think of "the better area", or "posh side". Don't think it should sound negative though. Is there a similar phrase in English, as I'm not sure? Thanks very much in advance.

genteel suburb
and that's about as nice as I can get about Lichterfelde!

How apt - the exact 100% Tory equivalent in my hometown of Birmingham (UK)!

Comment: "I think this is my best bet as it's relatively short, explains what I want to convey and fits in with the rest of the text quite well. Thanks very much for your help!"

the older, more conservative part
Somehow I don't think the author is referring to the "warm and cozy" aspects of the "gute Stube", but rather the "older, conservative and somewhat stuffy" aspects that come to (my) mind, when I think of the good ol' German "Stube". ;-)

Showpiece
You're right, it does mean "parlour" within the CONTEXT of household, but I'd suggest the above.
"Die Arena der von den Nazis missbrauchten Olympischen Spiele von 1936 ist in den vergangenen vier Jahren für 242 Millionen Euro auf einen hoch modernen Stand gebracht worden. Berlin hat neben dem Pariser Platz am Brandenburger Tor nun eine zweite prächtig aufgemöbelte «gute Stube», sogar noch ein bisschen größer und protziger als das Areal am Wahrzeichen der Hauptstadt."

in this context: Berlin's Uptown
or classy neighborhood - gute Stube is the equivalent of the formal parlor or formal room with the connotation of some German homeyness (Gemütlichkeit). Hard to find a similar imgage in English for a residential area...

affluent neighborhood - completely away from the image, but might better hit the essence of the source message...

for that district \"Uptown\" is not a viable option. I retreat to classy or affluent neighborhood.

"gute Stube" appears several times in the text and it's about one specific area of Berlin. Is that any use?
