German term

gute Stube

Homework / test German to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
It concerns an area of Berlin, which is suppposed to be the "gute Stube". Says "parlour" in the dictionary, but I'm not sure if this will convey the point about the type of area it is - well off. Has anyone got any idea? I can only think of "the better area", or "posh side". Don't think it should sound negative though. Is there a similar phrase in English, as I'm not sure? Thanks very much in advance.

For us from Handsworth (see pic!), Erdington means only one think: Six Ways (oh, and up the road from Spaghetti Junction)
Non-ProZ.com Jan 10, 2005:
i used to live in Erdington, but right on the border of Sutton Coldfield, small world.
Francis Lee (X) Jan 10, 2005:
I have to point out that, if anything, Berlin's "gute Stube" WOULD normally be downtown, i.e. the Brandenburg Gate area, e.g. http://www.berlinkompakt.net/veranstaltung.php?id=6&cl=de
Francis Lee (X) Jan 10, 2005:
Yup, as I guessed - exactly on the opposite side of town! LichterfeldE-Ost is a bit of a Snoozeville, if you ask me, and very much CDU-dog-owner-country.
Non-ProZ.com Jan 10, 2005:
Lichterfelder-Ost (South West)
Francis Lee (X) Jan 10, 2005:
If you could tell us Berliners which area is involved, that might help... (doesn't sound like my neighborhood, at any rate)
Non-ProZ.com Jan 10, 2005:
It's basically market research on a certain area of Berlin and if it's suitable to an open a certain business there. Will the people who live there earn enough money to afford it?
Olaf Reibedanz Jan 10, 2005:
with Friderike - we need more context :-)
Non-ProZ.com Jan 10, 2005:
extra note In der guten Stube Berlins wohnt das Geld der Hauptstadt
"gute Stube" appears several times in the text and it's about one specific area of Berlin. Is that any use?
Friderike Butler Jan 10, 2005:
Can you state full sentence in which term is used? Might be helpful...

How apt - the exact 100% Tory equivalent in my hometown of Birmingham (UK)!

the older, more conservative part

Somehow I don't think the author is referring to the "warm and cozy" aspects of the "gute Stube", but rather the "older, conservative and somewhat stuffy" aspects that come to (my) mind, when I think of the good ol' German "Stube". ;-)

Showpiece

You're right, it does mean "parlour" within the CONTEXT of household, but I'd suggest the above.

"Die Arena der von den Nazis missbrauchten Olympischen Spiele von 1936 ist in den vergangenen vier Jahren für 242 Millionen Euro auf einen hoch modernen Stand gebracht worden. Berlin hat neben dem Pariser Platz am Brandenburger Tor nun eine zweite prächtig aufgemöbelte «gute Stube», sogar noch ein bisschen größer und protziger als das Areal am Wahrzeichen der Hauptstadt."

in this context: Berlin's Uptown

or classy neighborhood - gute Stube is the equivalent of the formal parlor or formal room with the connotation of some German homeyness (Gemütlichkeit). Hard to find a similar imgage in English for a residential area...

affluent neighborhood - completely away from the image, but might better hit the essence of the source message...

for that district \"Uptown\" is not a viable option. I retreat to classy or affluent neighborhood.

neutral Francis Lee (X) : "affluent neighborhood" is OK-ish
