I think it implies that this position is not "just" a job but a career, i.e. even though this position might initially be not that great, it is made to look attractive by the availability of a career path.

"Existenz" means livelihood here.

As already suggested Existenz means livelihood or way of making a living, but this involves also having a life.
Or: would like to establsh himself in a new and enduring livelihood.
