German term
Greiflager
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Engineering: Industrial
Logistics: Warehouse storage
The paragraph that I'm currently translating explains how items are sorted and stored at XXX's warehouse. High-turnover items (A items according to an ABC analysis) are stored at the "Greiflager," while high-bay storage and mobile storage systems are used for the remaining ones. My problem is not that I don't understand what Greiflager means, but rather that I can't think of the correct term in English for it (not to mention that it's not in my dictionaries or glossaries) and haven't been able to come up with a convincing term. Maybe it's because logistics systems tend to be a bit more specific and talk about fixed bins for high-turnover items and such, but my brain doesn't seem to want to come up with an answer. I've been toying with using "readily accessible," but that doesn't quite cut it. Any takers?

Picking stock
Apparently, this can also be an "order pick warehouse", but I think "picking stock" would be more suitable in this case. Both these translations appear in Benz/Wessels' Dictionary of Logistics.

I have found the Benz/Wessels dictionary very good. It is published by Cornelsen, and the ISBN ref. is 3-464-49436-5.

Comment: "I ended up going with piece-picking storage area, but you would have needed the entire document and the diagrams included to figure that out (way too much context to include in my original question). What I needed was a good solid lead, and yours was perfect (not to mention that "picking stock" would be the right answer for about 99% of all cases). Thanks!
BTW. Is the Benz/Wessels dictionary good? I'm not too happy with my logistics-related dictionaries/glossaries, and wouldn't mind putting down some good old cash for a good dictionary in that area!"
