Wilhelm hatte zahlreiche Mätressen, mit der 24 Jahre jüngeren Karoline von
Schlotheim genoss er seit 1787 seine letzte und längste Liaison. Alleine mit ihr
hatte der Landgraf sechs überlebende Kinder. Für sie wurde der Damenbau auf der
Löwenburg erweitert und eingerichtet.
