German term

Er hat sich entschieden

German to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations smoke detectors
This is a slogan for a new smoke detector that is about to be launched - I am currently looking for a good English translation of this slogan (sorry no further context). The smoke detector combines several different types of smoke detector in a single case - so the emphasis is on making the correct decision.

Discussion

Michael Bailey (asker) Jan 26, 2007:
I know it sounds strange - the thing is that this is a multi-function device so it uses its different sensors to also decide whether a deceptive alarm has taken place or not. (i.e. it can tell whether detector contamination might have lead to a deceptive alarm).
casper (X) Jan 26, 2007:
'Der Brandmelder hat sich entschieden' = The smoke detector has made up its mind? I'm obviously not getting it right. Could you please throw some more light on the meaning, based on the source text? Thanks!
Michael Bailey (asker) Jan 26, 2007:
Er "Er" refers to the Brandmelder (smoke detector)
casper (X) Jan 26, 2007:
Sorry, I didn't frame my question right: Does the 'er' refer to the buyer (of the smoke detector)?
casper (X) Jan 26, 2007:
The 'er' refers to the buyer (of the smoke detector)?

I think 'reading the smoke signals' is excellent, but these are alternatives for describing the cleverness of the machine

read the smoke signals

I'm not sure how creative you're allowed to be with that slogan but if some creativity is allowed, how about something like "XXX will read/understand all kinds of smoke signals!" (or a shorter version along the same lines)
Note from asker:
I liked it a lot but the customer wanted something different :(

I think, it conveys what you want to say. Pl. see this link:

The easy choice

From your description, it sounds like the idea is that the detector incorporates all the options and decides 'on its own' which one to use in a given situation, so the buyer doesn't have to choose a particular type and/or doesn't have to evaluate the outputs of several types.

Or 'The right decision' - similar idea, but closer to what the detector does.

got it all worked out

"The smoke detector got it all worked out"
Meaning: This s.d. has the ability to read the data input, weigh up different options and make an educated decision. Sounds clever.
