English term

"jump drive" "memory stick"

English to Russian Tech/Engineering Computers: Hardware
It's the thing that you can put on key chains that holds half a gig to a gig of memory. I've been trying to find the least technical, most commonly used translation of this word. A commonly used slang word would be great, especially if it occurs in Russian print media. thank you.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Apr 19, 2005:
haha - good point. Hope we didn't offend any Masyanya fans. Good distinction, Eugene.
EugeneXP Apr 19, 2005:
Objection, sirs! "Masyanya", "magazinchik bo", etc. are not called "", but "". I've only heard "" with regard to more "humble" creations - like mini-presentations and "commercials", and only in Macromedia Flash format.
Ivan Novoselov Apr 19, 2005:
Yes, "fleshka" also means flash cartoon, it is used in both meanings.
Kirill Semenov Apr 19, 2005:
In Russian "" may refer both to the device and to the Web flash-cartoon
Non-ProZ.com Apr 19, 2005:
re: for those familiar with this term, does "fleshka" refer:

only to "jump drive"/"flash drive"
-or-
to both "jump drive" and "flash cartoon" (eg. "masyanya", "magazinchik bo", etc.)
-or-
only to "flash cartoon"
-or-
something else?

thanks - rd

флэшка

Но это разговорное, в печати встретите едва ли.

А в печати, пожалуй, флэш-диск. Но это в компьютерных изданиях. А в универсальных СМИ просто само понятие как-то не встречается.

I would call it a USB-флэш-диск

флэшка is good, but definitely unfit for print as this is slang - you would (probably) not call a car "wheels" in a US publication? Idea's the same.

just call it a USB flash disk... or a USB-флэш-диск по-русски!

Cheers,
Peer comment(s):

neutral Kirill Semenov : as Askr pointed out *slang is needed* here ;-)
