The availability of copying techniques for marble sculpture from the sixth century onwards suggests that sculptors had developed the skills to transfer measurements from full-size model to marble block. The earliest evidence of the use of a copying device is a number of bosses (or grooves betraying the removal of bosses) from the foreheads of a handful of figures from the metopes and pediments of the temple of Zeus at Olympia.
