English term

Battlespace

English to Hebrew Other Military / Defense Joint operations
My sentence reads: "The domains, or battlespace areas, are air, sea, land, space and cyberspace".

Battlespace is described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlespace

I thought מרחב לחימה (Babylon says "combat area" to that), and no, I'm not looking for מלחמות בחלל... :-)

Discussion

Lingopro (asker) Dec 19, 2011:
Thank you everyone! I'm in awe of this interesting discussion and appreciate all your help (answerers and contributors). The decision was tough, and I really liked your suggestion Ty and even wrote it in, but finally decided to stick with מרחב לחימה, which was my inclination from the beginning (see in my question). One thing is for sure, there is not "one correct answer", and when closing the question I will gloss the other suggestions as well.
Naftali Guttman Dec 19, 2011:
see also this article according to it מרחב לחימה

Naftali Guttman Dec 19, 2011:
opinions is mixed In IDF shortcuts there isn't an agreed term they use שדה קרב. In Maarachot they also use שדה קרב but לחימה is also used (see article).

Moti Marom Dec 18, 2011:
Quoting Gad's link - "at all levels of the battlespace*** from government data centers and compute-intensive High Performance Computing Clusters to operational and tactical field deployments".

I guess the English translation for this would be either "Combat arena" or "Arena of warfare" (something along these lines).

My military dictionary gives this for מרחב לחימה :
The English translation it gives is "zone of operations".

I also found the following definitions for "battlespace":
Definitions:
(DOD) The environment, factors, and conditions that must be understood to successfully apply combat power, protect the force, or complete the mission. This includes the air, land, sea, space, and the included enemy and friendly forces; facilities; weather; terrain; the electromagnetic spectrum; and the information environment within the operational areas and areas of interest.

A unified military strategy to integrate and combine armed forces for the military theatre of operations, including air, information, land, sea and space to achieve military goals.
http://www.wordnik.com/words/battlespace

What nags me about these definitions is that the "space" in "battlespace" refers less to physical space (although it certainly includes it) - one definition refers mainly to environmental factors which include air etc the other refers to a military strategy..which includes air etc. That's why I thought זירה might be a more suitable substitute for מרחב as it is somewhat more....indirect/vague ...perhaps.

In addition, although it may not be the same in Hebrew, in English, "arena" is perhaps a more suitable superordinate for air, land, sea, space, cyberspace, information etc...
Some of the definitions (including the ones I quoted) use "theatre of operations" ...although I think "arena" is an equally valid synonym.

Very ineresting Ty, as well as informative. I'm considering my options...

You have a point! Thank you!
agree Sandra & Kenneth Grossman : I like your thinking. I would stay with "מרחב", though.

Thanks Sangro! Sometimes I have a tendency to over-think these things, sometimes to my detriment, thanks anyway! :-)

Note from asker:

Merely another suggestion. I'm going a little further from the original in terms of terminology, but I think that my suggestion captures the gist of the original better than the others because
unlike
is more readily taken to mean everything from physical space to enemy forces to environment.

Hope this is helpful.
Note from asker:
Thanks for thinking out of the box, and although I like how you think, I don't think תנאי would fit here. Anyway, file already submitted.
