English term

The last little corporal who tried came a cropper.

English to Bulgarian Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Cinema
One of the memorable quotes from the movie 'The Battle of Britain', 1969.

The British Ambassador to Switzerland's response to a German ultimatum:"We're not easily frightened. Also we know how hard it is for an army to cross the Channel – ///the last little corporal who tried came a cropper. /// So don't threaten and dictate to us until you're marching up Whitehall! And even then we won't listen!"

Could anyone comment on this particular sentence please? It must have been taken from somewhere, I mean from a proverb or from a past event. Basically, I get the meaning but yet I seem to be missing something.

Thank you very much in advance.

В бързината съм объркал езиковата двойка; затова питането ми е на английски.

Последният малък капрал, който опита това, претърпя неуспех.

The Little Corporal /"малкият капрал"/ е прякор на Наполеон І, за който се намесва в случая.

agree Sylvio Peshev : "претърпя неуспех" а малко слабо за "come a cropper" -- по-добре "претърпя пълен провал"
