English term

high in the mix

English to French Art/Literary Music sound, bass
But even more noticeable than Ronson is Tony Visconti on bass, high in the mix, verging on out of tune, and wisely about to hang up the four-string for producing (thus opening the door for Trevor Bolder and the completion of the post-Hype consortium Spiders from Mars).

assez présent dans le balance

I think to avoid unwanted connotations, while avoiding the trap of modifying the source text to avoid ambiguïties in FR, this could be one solution.
'high in the mix' is not a qualitatvie judgement — it is neother an inherently bad or good thing. I believe 'présent' is the best way to convey the idea... by being 'high' in the mix, it means it is clearly noticeable, which in terms of music recording implies that it is 'present' — its 'presence is noticeable'.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I'd say here that it needs only the trength of 'assez': there is nothing about 'high in the mix' to justify the modifier 'very'.

I’d say that fort dans la balance alone does sound a bit strange in French; fort may be interpreted at first sight as meaning something like much. Adding très allows to avoid any ambiguity ;-)

la basse est trop forte dans le mixage et enterre parfois la guitare

Q/ During the mixing of The Man Who Sold The World, did David ever say to you, “Um, Tony, I think your bass is too high in the mix”?

Samuel McAdorey.

TV/ Never! Hah! I said my bass was too high in the mix, and Ronson was the man who wanted it pushed up.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : There is nothing about 'high in the mix' per se to justify the use of 'trop'; it just means it is quite prominent, without implying excess. / 'Fort' has a qualitative connotation that is unwanted for 'high' here (suggests 'loud').

Thanks Tony. I see your point. I thought it was implied and needed to be spelt out in French. We'll just leave out 'trop' then.
