depends on the context....

both are correct and mean more or less the same thing...it would depend on the context in which you are translating.
By the way, one would only say "foundling" and not "foundling child". The child is implied within the meaning of the word.

derelict infant, waif, foundling, abandoned child.

If still infant, it is better to use one of the first three words, i.e., derelict infant, waif or foundling. If grown up child, then it would be better to use either abandoned child or homeless child.

foundling

A foundling is not necessarily abandonned. Could be an orphan or victim of some other circumstance. The original text also argues strongly for "foundling."
