Of course I can understand that you find it to be in your own 'best interest' to pay for membership - that's not the issue here.

As I pointed out earlier, as a paying member you are in a far better position to get rapid results from the support system than we non-payers are.

With that in mind, I venture to suggest that it would also be in your 'best interest' actively to promote/protect the integrity of this Forum, which is a key component of the Proz platform which you are paying for.

Let me rephrase that suggestion in the form of a straightforward question: Have you submitted a support ticket - with paying-member queue-jumping privilege - asking for the elimination of 'Rita' and all her junk posts?

Yes, I'm lazy and reusing the same imagery.

AI labs test their models for potentially dangerous capabilities before releasing them.

Ahem ... Let me express some doubts here.

Anyone who wans to be in the business of checking someone or something for 'potentially dangerous capabilities' ***MUST*** have the same OR BETTER understanding of the subject matter.

Absolutely no Ifs or Maybes - it'a a MUST.

AI keeps improving - initially with human help but more and more it's becoming capable of improving itself ON ITS OWN.

It's only a question of time before AI becomes so advanced compared to human capabilities that 'controlling it' will be like asking a Neanderthal to manage intergalactic travel.

Or like plucking a native from Sentinel Island and putting him/her in charge of watching over a white hat hacker to make sure it's not in fact a black hat hacker .... it's definitely going to work!

Hi to all reading this,

Not so while ago, on LinkedIn I received some call for joining Acolad. After website error, my language pair and country not included, they fixed it, and some guy from Netherlands Sjoerd Weijl contacted me via email to do AI Dubbing and Subtitling test for a video of couple of minutes. He offered decent rates, but after passing the tests and onboarding me on their acolad platform I didn't hear anything from him for two weeks. So no NDAs, no job offers, no upcoming projects, nothing, not even replies to my emails about any upcoming job.

Anyway, after ditching them, now I'm sharing this with you, because you probably came across to this scheme, when pool of candidates doing testing, and actually filling their AI matrix for free, behind a mask of "a required test for onboarding".

The system here on ProZ doesn't allow for me to rate Acolad and comment, because I've never worked for them, which is the case. And I'll never will.

They are still not deleting my profiles on their platforms, after I asked them to do that so many times via email, LinkedIn...

Unfortunately there's not a single platform for freelancers that can stop these schemes, do some action about it, or similar. Not a single one.

I haven’t the faintest idea what their intention was: a free translation?! I knew what the name meant, but as ‘Lamalice’ is a common surname, I thought it was just a coincidence (the moral of the story: even after working in this field for over 40 years and no longer being young, I’m still naive). The phone number is still active, but when I ring, nobody answers. The fake proof of payment they sent me was from a Maltese bank. I threatened them about 10 days ago that I’d let my colleagues know by every means possible what had happened…

"Why the OpenAI escape is the most worrying AI mishap yet

Containing the technology is getting harder

IT SOUNDS like something out of a sci-fi film. On July 16th Hugging Face, an artificial-intelligence platform, announced it had notified law enforcement after an attacker had used an AI agent to breach its systems. On July 21st it emerged that there had been no human involved; the AI agent was the attacker.

A combination of OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol, a model that the company had released earlier in July, and a more powerful, as-yet-unreleased model broke free from the laboratory, then hacked Hugging Face’s systems. The AI models were looking for a solution to an evaluation problem they had been set by their makers. “This situation is unprecedented,” says Stephan Llerena, a research fellow at the Institute for Law and AI, an American think-tank.

AI labs test their models for potentially dangerous capabilities before releasing them. OpenAI wanted to see how its latest models would fare on ExploitGym, a set of standard problems that tests how good AI systems are at exploiting known vulnerabilities in several popular applications, including Google’s Chrome browser.

OpenAI applies safeguards to its publicly available models, which ensure they do not pursue unwanted actions. Ask the commercially available version of ChatGPT to help you hack into a website, for example, and it will refuse. To assess the capabilities of its unreleased model, the company had temporarily suspended those restrictions. Simply letting a highly capable cyberattacker loose on the open internet would have been too risky, however, so OpenAI had placed its models in a sandbox—an isolated computer environment with no internet access, except for an internally hosted third-party service that allowed it to fetch small software packages needed to complete its tests.

The company got more than it bargained for. Rather than solving the problems in its evaluation directly, OpenAI’s models gained access to the open internet by exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability in the software-fetching service. Having so achieved access to the internet, the AI models correctly concluded that the solutions to the problems they had been set were stored by Hugging Face, a popular library for open-source AI models and datasets. The models chained together a multi-step attack. They began by uploading a dataset to Hugging Face, which was automatically processed by the platform. Over the course of a weekend, that dataset (which Hugging Face described as “malicious”) allowed the models to harvest login details and access internal servers. Hugging Face and OpenAI independently detected the breach, and said that they were collaborating on the investigation.

On July 21st OpenAI said in a blog post that it had responded by implementing stricter controls on its infrastructure and disclosed the vulnerabilities its models had found to the developer of the software gateway. It had also included Hugging Face in its “trusted access” programme, which gave it the ability to use models with enhanced cyber capabilities (like the one that had hacked its own computers) to help the company improve its defences.

OpenAI also stressed that its models had been “hyperfocused” on finding solutions for the ExploitGym evaluation. It is unclear what would have happened if the AI models had had other goals, however. And Hugging Face is no laggard, from a computer-security perspective. It is a tech firm valued at $4.5 billion with hundreds of employees and a dedicated cyber-security team. Things might have turned out much worse for a less well-resourced outfit.

This is not the first sign that AI models’ capabilities are starting to exceed people’s control. In April an Anthropic researcher posted online that he had been surprised after Claude Mythos, then an unreleased model, had emailed him to let him know that it had successfully escaped a sandbox as part of its own cyber-capability evaluation while he sat in a park eating a sandwich. Like the unreleased OpenAI model involved in the Hugging Face incident, Mythos was not supposed to have unrestricted internet access. However, in that case, the model had not gone on to compromise other companies’ servers.

Nor are AI models’ surprising capabilities restricted to hacking. In May an unreleased OpenAI model disproved the 80-year-old planar unit distance conjecture, a central problem in combinatorial geometry first posed by the mathematician Paul Erdős in 1946. On July 20th Levent Alpöge, a mathematician at Harvard University, wrote that he had used Claude Fable 5, a model released by Anthropic in July, to disprove the Jacobian conjecture, which had similarly stumped mathematicians for more than 80 years.

OpenAI has not publicly disclosed the details of how its unreleased model escaped confinement. But even if it had, the fact that AI systems are starting to surpass humans in cyber-security tasks means that “only very, very few cyber experts in the world” could have properly understood the way the breach occurred, says Alex Meinke of Apollo Research, an AI-safety group based in London.

The American government has recently been regulating model releases on the fly. But the incident demonstrates the risks posed even by unreleased AI models that are still under development. “There are no requirements in state or federal law for companies to disclose the internal deployment of highly capable AI models like the one involved in the Hugging Face hack,” says Nathan Calvin, general counsel at Encode AI, an American nonprofit that campaigns for AI regulation.

While some state laws in America require companies to disclose cyber-security incidents, their scope is narrow. A bill enacted in California last year mandates that frontier labs report any “critical safety incident”, which includes a model using “deceptive techniques” to subvert monitoring “outside of the context of an evaluation”, within 15 days of discovering it. It is unclear whether the breach on Hugging Face would have qualified, says Mr Calvin.

This raises another thorny question: had the consequences of the intrusion been more costly, who would have been liable? Federal anti-hacking law aims only to punish intentional unauthorised access to computer systems. OpenAI did not intend for its models to go rogue in search of a crib sheet for their test. “Many of these legal questions turn on intent—what did OpenAI know or foresee?” says Mr Llerena. This hack came as a surprise. It will be harder to plead ignorance next time."

Thank you for sharing your experience and for warning the rest of us.
To be honest, the scammer's name alone, "Lamalice", would have immediately raised a red flag for me.
Being contacted via WhatsApp for a first professional approach is also something I personally would not engage with.
But, it's easy to say that from the outside.
Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and they know exactly how to exploit moments when people are excited about a new opportunity or under pressure.
Any of us could be caught off guard.
Thank you again for sharing your story. It may help someone else avoid the same situation.

I don't want to discourage you, but I also don't want to give you unrealistic expectations.
The translation industry has changed dramatically in recent years. Many experienced translators with 15, 20 or even 30 years of experience are facing reduced workloads, lower rates and increasing competition from AI mainly. Building a freelance translation career today is considerably more challenging than it was a decade ago.
Since you already have a degree in Pedagogy, I would encourage you not to overlook this qualification. It may offer you greater stability and opportunities, and your translation training can still be valuable in the classroom. Translation is an excellent teaching tool and can help students develop vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, writing skills, cultural awareness and critical thinking.
I would also add one point about training. A postgraduate course in translation is undoubtedly worthwhile, but it is a specialisation, not a substitute for years of professional practice.
Likewise, having a degree in translation does not automatically make someone a good translator.
Translation is much more than knowing languages or mastering CAT tools. It requires excellent writing skills in your native language, strong research skills, sound judgement, subject-matter knowledge, cultural awareness, curiosity, consistency, and the ability to solve problems and make informed decisions. Those are skills that develop gradually through experience.

I’ve been scammed for the very first time. I’m usually extremely careful, but this time, as it was an urgent project, I let my guard down. I was initially contacted via WhatsApp ( [phone removed] ). The person in question (Denis Lamalice) spoke to me in fluent French, with a slight Parisian accent, telling me that he was involved in a business deal that was currently confidential and that he needed a series of emails translated from English into Portuguese and from Spanish into Portuguese. I replied that I always corresponded with clients via email, and sure enough, shortly afterwards I received a series of email texts concerning a corporate merger. I translated the texts and sent them along with my invoice. The following day, I received a «transfer receipt» via WhatsApp showing an incorrect amount (less than the invoice total), which never reached my bank account. I complained, he apologised and sent me a new set of emails – again urgent – which I translated, having issued a new invoice. 8 days later, having no payment I did send a reminder. This was followed by dead silence. Fortunately, the amount in question is not large (95 EUR), but it is frustrating that these things happen, especially when work is otherwise scarce. As the emails mentioned a French lawyer working at the French branch of a major US law firm, I sent him an email explaining what had happened, but have not yet received a reply.

P.S. I’ve just noticed that this "Denis Lamalice" has set up a profile on Proz…

A lot of good advice for others about getting their money. How about that your company has not yet paid for the project that I did in SmartCAT? The payment deadline (60 days!) expired July 16. And this is happening after you tried to make me lower my rate AFTER I completed the project, making up laughable excuses that you somehow did not understand what my rate was. I am sure you know what it is: FY26Q2 Corpus Project, Evgeny Sidorenko. Circle Translations, assigned by Paul Paulauskas on May 8. Before giving advice on business practices to others, you'd better start paying in time to freelancers. I have one advice to anybody working with your company: stay away.

When I run QA, the grid view (source on left, target on right) switches to a "QA mode" where the header says "TRANSLATION UNITS: 5" (or whatever number) and only the segments that have QA issues are shown. When I'm done with QA, how do I return back to the original grid showing all the segments? Unable to escape from this "QA mode", I've been quitting CafeTran and restarting it, which obviously is not ideal.

With the number of choices already available on the market (sorry Artem), compatibility between older tools and newer resources, along with learning curves, etc., needs to be taken into account.

@William, @Li-Hsiang, and others who use similar approaches,

I have followed several of these threads on freelancer autonomy and problems using different tools (and have also experienced different technical issues). Though I could not, at present, start over with my own templates and models, I would be interested in learning about your more independent workflows to profit from your experience and skills.

Have you ever considered proposing a training course to ProZ? Or is there already one I did not find when searching?

When One Drive is not synced and there are files there, you can treat its contents as they would be in a regular folder - copy, move, delete - to other locations. Again - I have a lot of stuff in One Drive - mostly translation reference files and they are just sitting there, and have been for many years now. They are not synced with anything. I just use One Drive as cloud storage.
A Q&D fix is to rename folders that you want One Drive to leave alone. It will lose the path.
As to Memoq - you need to assign Memoq to look for your projects elsewhere (in other folders). But here I can't help you because I only use Memoq at work and other people do these things for me :-/ [/quote]

BBC First, serial "Zbrodnie w Midsomer" (Midsomer Murders), sezon 20, odcinek 6.

W trakcie przedstawienia cyrkowego na arenie zastrzelony został klaun. Lekarka sądowa stwierdza:
The bullet is 0.240 caliber, designed for a rifle only.

Polskie tłumaczenie: Kula kalibru 6 mm zaprojektowana tylko do strzelby.

Powtórka błędu opisanego w „ze strzelbami w lesie”.

Tłumaczenie powtarza się 17 razy dla liczby pojedynczej (rifle) oraz 2 razy dla liczby mnogiej (rifles).

Na stronie [url removed] #Rifles_in_Curtis_Ferabbee.27s_gun_safe opisane i pokazane są karabiny (więcej niż jeden), które grały rolę narzędzia zbrodni. To analogia do sytuacji, gdy jednego aktora zastępuje więcej niż jeden kaskader. Dlaczego tutaj była taka potrzeba, twórcy filmu wiedzą, ale nie powiedzą.

PS. Możliwa przyczyna: poszczególne sceny nagrywano w różnych i odległych lokalizacjach oraz w znacznych odstępach czasowych. Wypożyczenie, przechowywanie i przewożenie jednej sztuki prawdziwej broni byłoby i kosztowne, i trudne do wykonania z powodu przepisów.

Hi Camilla,

Just try to log in using a completely different browser. As far as I remember, a few years ago (when RWS was still SLD) I was unable to log in from my default browser (Imho it was Opera at that time) but I was able to reach the site from Firefox without any problems.

A plumber who is blissfully unaware that gravity will never send water UP [I wish I was making this up] is hardly a 'pro' according to my 'definitions of terms'.

Any parallels with a translator who dead serious suggested to translate an ambiguously worded safety measure as 'make sure you stay **downwind** from the source of poisonous gas' [not making this up either!] are purely coincidental and accidental.

As for 'AI Translations Are More Dangerous Than You Think' ...

Well, I never for a second imagined that AI output passing of as a 'translation' is anything to be relied upon blindly, so my version of this title would be:

When One Drive is not synced and there are files there, you can treat its contents as they would be in a regular folder - copy, move, delete - to other locations. Again - I have a lot of stuff in One Drive - mostly translation reference files and they are just sitting there, and have been for many years now. They are not synced with anything. I just use One Drive as cloud storage.
A Q&D fix is to rename folders that you want One Drive to leave alone. It will lose the path.
As to Memoq - you need to assign Memoq to look for your projects elsewhere (in other folders). But here I can't help you because I only use Memoq at work and other people do these things for me :-/
