Source text - English Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common metabolic illness worldwide. Its incidence has reached epidemic proportions in western societies, mainly in developing countries (Zimmet el al., 2001). Consider- ing the heterogeneity of this disease, current therapies are limited and unable to modify the natural history of this d.isorder; therefore, it is necessary to explore new antid.iabetic therapies. Plants have been an important source of drug leads; taking into account their vast struc- tural d.iversity, they are a.11 excellent alternative for developing new medicaments.
Translation - Spanish La diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM) es la enfermedad metabólica más común en todo el mundo. Su incidencia ha alcanzado proporciones epidémicas en las sociedades occidentales, principalmente en los países en desarrollo. (Zimmet el al., 2001) Considerando la heterogeneidad de esta enfermedad, las terapias actuales son limitadas e incapaces de modificar la historia natural de este trastorno; por lo tanto, es necesario explorar nuevas terapias antidiabéticas. Las plantas han sido una fuente importante de fármacos, y teniendo en cuenta su gran diversidad estructural, todas ellas son excelentes alternativas para el desarrollo de nuevos medicamentos.
