(1) Announcing the Justin Chlebus Memorial Scholarship

It has now been one year since ProZ.com staff member Justin Chlebus passed away. He had just turned 22.
Many of you will remember the subsequent outpouring of sympathy in the forums from ProZ.com members, many of whom had been touched by Justin in the course of his work. Despite his young age, Justin was a key member of the early ProZ.com team, serving as a programmer and systems administrator, and also in other roles. In fact, he was a phenomenal talent and person. Not only did he do a lot, he taught a lot to the rest of the team. Much of what we enjoy today as a ProZ.com community we owe to Justin.
Now, in honor of Justin's life and on the occasion of his birthday, a scholarship program is being created: the Justin Chlebus Memorial Scholarship.
The Justin Chlebus Memorial Scholarship program is intended to provide, annually, an opportunity for a select young person to spend a year studying abroad. It is envisioned that each year, a call will go out through ProZ.com for applications, and a committee (including members) will select a young man or woman, in college or having just completed it, who is talented in some field and who also has a passion for understanding a new culture and learning a new language--as Justin did.
In the spirit of the community that Justin helped to bring together, children of ProZ.com members, and also young members of our community, will be encouraged to apply. Applications will also be accepted from people outside of ProZ.com. (The program will not be limited to those interested in translation.)
The scholarship program was kicked off this weekend with an in-person event among Justin's friends and family in Syracuse. This event was first and foremost a celebration of Justin's life among the people who knew and loved him. It also served as the start of fund-raising efforts for the scholarship program. Several thousand US dollars were raised toward the fund.

The 2 millionth KudoZ question has just been asked. Congratulations to the community of askers and answerers who, together in "the search for the perfect term", have shared so much help and camaraderie over the years.
With the increased size of the glossary has come increased utility. Now, on a typical day, ten thousand or more translators will use the KudoZ archive to research terms.

Organizing is easy - you just pick a place (often, a restaurant or coffee shop) and a time (between September 26 and October 4 for the ITD celebration), and then the ball starts moving. There are no fees - people normally just pay for their own food at the gathering.

A new directory of translation companies has been created, allowing end clients (and other translation companies) to search for the companies that may best be able to meet their translation needs.

ProZ.com had a directory of translation companies already--what makes this one different?
When end clients search for translation companies, the criteria they use are different than the criteria used by translation companies when they seek freelancers. For example, an end client may want to know the range of services a translation company offers (AV, DTP, etc.), the size of the company, standards compliance achieved (ex. ISO 9001), etc. This new directory supports searching by such criteria.
The new directory is backed by a new profile format, developed specifically for translation companies. If you run a company or act at ProZ.com on behalf of one, updating your new company profile may result in new opportunities for your company, as few companies have yet updated their profiles with information corresponding to the new search fields.

Have you earned a translation credential, of the type offered by organizations like the Chartered Institute of Linguists (UK), the American Translator Association (USA), the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (Australia), or others?
If so, congratulations! Please make sure to report your credential in your profile. Then, ask for a ProZ.com staff member to verify it for you (either by going to the appropriate place on the web, or by providing documentation). This will help to distinguish you as a professional. Some clients search specifically for translators who have earned credentials. Because of the way the database works, it is not enough just to list the credential in your CV.
